It may take several: days for the swelling to stop and reverse. You need to keep the foot elevated to help decrease the swelling.

Elevate Foot.: It is not the cast being applied that is stopping the foot from swelling. In fact, the cast can sometimes be delayed until the swelling goes down. Even then a new cast maybe necessary, as the foot gets smaller. Elevation is what allows the swelling to decrease. If you can elevate it just a little higher than your heart, it will happen faster. Often times , a removable cast boot is used.
