Pyelonephritis?: The pain associated with a kidney infection, or pyelonephritis, occurs in the low back and lower abdomen and can be severe. You can try Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen to take the edge off of it, but if that doesn't work, you may need to either contact your doctor or return to the emergency room for something stronger, until the antibiotics can kick in.
