New symptom: Because there now is a new symptom (the pain behind the ear), your doctor may choose to have an ENT specialist examine the throat and ears. Although ear popping is consistent with Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD), the pain could be a sign of infection requiring treatment and/or abnormal growth such as cholesteatoma. ETD alone would not cause tenderness.
