Intestine infection?: A simple tummy ache with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, may be from a virus infection, bacteria infection, or contaminated food. A normal person, not pregnant, not on medications, usually recovers easily. Taking a Pedialyte popsicle hourly, plus eating little else for 1-2 days, may settle things down. Otherwise, stool tests for norovirus, Giardia, & bacteria (S,S,C,Y) may be needed.

Infection: If you both have the same symptoms, it's likely you both share the same infection. 2 weeks is the limit we give an viral infection. If symptoms continue beyond that, there are a number of infections that can cause loose stools. These include Giardia, C. difficile, and some parasites. Pedialyte can cause protracted diarrhea after a virus, because the intestine needs nutrition to recover.
