A 43-year-old member asked:

Why does the doctor clean your skin before getting a blood test done?

To avoid infection: Taking blood involves inserting a needle into a vein. If the skin is not cleaned before the needle stick, the microorganisms on the skin can gain entry into the blood stream, or infect the skin injured by the needle stick.

A 46-year-old male asked:

Can you demand a blood test done from your doctor ?

Dr. Heidi Fowler

Blood tests: You might demand one but that does not mean that the physician would order it. If you are a direct pay patient in Britain- the physician might be more apt to order in the case of a gray zone call. However, if there really is no indication - the doctor may still decline. Most of us don't like to be ordered to do thinks.
