Reclined or sitting: Pressure on the ear drum is greatest when you are lying flat - doesn't matter if it's on back, side or stomach. So you are going to be most comfortable propped into a recline position or actually sitting up. Doing maneuvers like you do on an airplane to adjust pressure in your ears (chew gum, yawn, eat gummy bears!) may also temporarily relieve some of the discomfort.
