Sometimes it: is difficult if not impossible to tell on physical exam alone whether an inguinal mass is an incarcerated hernia or an enlarged lymph node. Treatment is completely different for these conditions, so you need to see a doctor who can distinguish one from the other. Your doctor might even order an imaging test such as ultrasound.
