A member asked:

I hear that once metal plate is placed on 5th metacarpal bone, no need to remove it after complete recovery. but, i think that it will be extremely painful at old age. don't you think?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Metal plates: Implanted metal plates in the hand are safe & usually allow for good healing. As the healing process occurs, your body will usually grow into or encapsulate the metal. You will become accustomed to the metal well before old age, unless subsequent injuries to the same area occur or wound infection. If healed well, one can do more harm than good when trying to remove the plate, hence keep it in.
