Stretch, magnesium: Stretching would always be good prior to physical activity. Yoga would be good in general. Check side effects of any medication you are on.A lot of people are low in magnesium. Try taking 400-800 mg daily. Next is adequate hydration, hydration etc. A liquid trace mineral supplement would also be a good add-on.

Hydration: adequate hydration ,appropriate stretching before exercise,or early in the morning after a good night sleep. quality hydration after exercise,or outdoor work,like Gatorade,or similar drink. take ibuprofen as needed.

Find cause first: You do not give your age but from your description two likely causes would be electrolyte imbalances causing muscles having the most use at the time to spasm or you have a problem with your back around thoracic vertebra 12 causing a nerve to be pinched.
