Need more info: Do you have a fever? If not it sounds like you may have post nasal drip brought on by allergy and/or a virus. The mucus dripping down your throat will make you cough. Over the counter medication usually takes a few days to clear but if you don't feel better or have a fever you should see your family physician. And above all do not smoke if you normally do.
