Not much: There is transient local bleeding that looks like a bruise, and this resolves in time. The vein heals up and, if no longer competent, nearby veins route the blood just fine. Use a cold compress in the first few hours.

Vein damage.: If a vein is "blown" following a transfusion what happens is the vein is punctured and the blood will leak out of the vein causing a bruise (bluish discoloration). Over time the bruise will be absorbed by the body and heal. The bruised vein will either stop working, heal and re work or a new vein will form.
