A few thoughts: This is sometimes a tricky problem. The flushing, if done gently should not cause pain. So ask your nurse why the pain and what can she do to avoid it. Sometimes a clot dissolving medicine, tpa, can dissolve the clot and make it eaier and painless to flush. How to avoid clots can be more difficult. Try Aspirin or Coumadin (warfarin) but only your oncologist can guide about their use and the associated risks.

PICC line: Have your physician consider placing a picc line. (peripherally inserted central venous catheter) that would be less likely to clot off.

Shouldn't happen: Regular IV's should be run at a rate fast enough that they do not clot off. I consider this a nursing problem rather than a you problem.Ask your treating physicians why they can't seem to keep this from happening.
