Swelling, pain: Varicose veins may be painless, depending on their size and chonicity. If they thrombose they are typically painful and swollen. Early on they may itch and burn, and cause the sensation of fatigue and heaviness. Later they may bleed externally and untreated may lead to inflammatory changes that result in color changes and scarring of the skin and ulceration.

Vein Symptoms: Symptoms of varicose veins include pain, achiness, burning, pressure, dull ache, itching, or heaviness of the legs. Sometimes swelling develops in the lower legs & ankles. The leg veins can be tender. Advanced cases can develop skin damage in the lower ankles and feet. Sometime aggressive spider veins may form. A "blow out" sensation may occur if a vein rapidly expands with sudden valve failure.
