Muscle spasm: The lumbar disks are about five inches deep inside the body and on the other side of muscles, bone, the spinal cord and spinal nerves. It is not possible to feel the disks through the skin, even in a very thin emaciated person. You may be feeling a "knot" in the muscle, or maybe a bony prominence like the spinous process, but it's not a piece of disk!
