Chronic anxiety &: resultant ^ed cortisol levels can alter brain structure as well as levels of neurochemicals. Chronic exposure of a fetal brain to ^ed cortisol levels from maternal anxiety can cause permanent adverse effects, as can chronic stress in infancy & early childhood. Long-term, consistent Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy can "re-wire" the brain. Adjunctive anti-anxiety medications normalize neurochemicals.

The next time you start to be anxious about being anxious or about anything else, ask yourself if it's worth decreasing your neurons & neuronal connectivity to your frontal cortex. My kids learned early to say, " I'm not gonna shrink my basal ganglia over THAT !" I never let comments about their sounding as if they'd been in group therapy all their lives shrink my neurons.

Seriously, though, learn to laugh at yourself sometimes. Read www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-athletes-way/201402/chronic-stress-can-damage-brain-structure-and-connectivity & stick with CBT by a qualified psychologist & medication management by a psychiatrist. Live long & prosper.

If it still doesn't make sense, feel free to connect with me on HT for a consult. The important point is that you're young enough to reverse the physical & neurological impacts of chronic anxiety. Learn techniques now that you will need to employ from time to time for the rest of your life.
