Chronic anxiety &: resultant ^ed cortisol levels can alter brain structure as well as levels of neurochemicals. Chronic exposure of a fetal brain to ^ed cortisol levels from maternal anxiety can cause permanent adverse effects, as can chronic stress in infancy & early childhood. Long-term, consistent Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy can "re-wire" the brain. Adjunctive anti-anxiety medications normalize neurochemicals.
