Exam: You need to be examined by a dentist who will not only be able to see you gums, but will also take a full medical history. Your age and social habits including smoking, chewing tobacco, and alcohol can lay a role in your problem. You may have periodontitis.

See a dentist ASAP: Swollen gums with whitish base can be a sign that you are at risk for, or already have, advanced gum disease. Untreated gingivitis or tooth infection can lead to the tooth loss and other health problems. See your dentist ASAP because the sooner you treat it the better the outcome.
