MRI/EMG: MRI is the gold standard to assess soft tissue in the spine. To localize and prognosticate a compressive neuropathy, an EMG/nerve conduction study is safe, sensitive, and specific. These tests are often performed together and get the most useful information for physicians to determine best next steps, i.e., conservative management versus surgery.
