A member asked:

An optometrist is capable of detecting a torn retina, right?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe: Depends on the skill set of your optometrist..and the skill set varies with each optometrist. To examine the peripheral retina and identify a retinal break requires a higher level of ophthalmoscopic skill than most eye examiners exhibit (inclulding comprehensive ophthalmologists). In general, based on the ophthalmoscopic skills of the average practictioner we would expect ~40% miss rate for ODs
