A member asked:

Can an optometrist detect a torn or detached retina when she dilates my eyes for the exam?

Most likely: If you feel that they or any eye doctor can not for some reason, then you could get a second opinion with a retina specialist.

It Depends: Optometry training is limited compared to a board certified md ophthalmologist. Some optometrists are capable of carefully examining the peripheral retina and detecting damage. Most are not, in my experience. If you have a concern about this, you should see a board certified ophthalmologist.
