Eye irritation for 5 weeks, had antibiotic eye drops, antihistamines, bathe them in water and still nothing. gunky, red and painful, what could it be?

History, exam, test.: Today i saw someone who started with pollen allergies but ended up with far worse allergy to antibiotic eye ointment given by a well meaning doctor. Are you allergic to allergens in your environment (pets, pollen)? Overly dry eyes? A slit lamp exam, thorough history and likely allergy testing are important here.
