What is the difference between compulsive overeating and a food addiction?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

An addiction to: anything, including food, is a mood-altering, compulsive behavior that occurs in response to triggers (internal or external) that are largely out of awareness. The behavior continues beyond the point of dealing with dysphoria and usually then causes harm, but the addict still won't quit. From this description, there is little difference between compulsive overeating and food addictions.
