What kind of x-rays can check for problems such as ulcers or polyps inside the colon? does mri work for that? prefer not to do colonoscopy first.

Colin polyps : some people to capsule swallowing tests as well as CTA of the colon. It depends if the hospitals in your area have that. Colonoscopy is best and not too troubling

Sometimes: Special CT scan techniques can see some issues such as tumors or larger polyps but cannot determine if abnormalities are cancer or pre-cancerous lesions so there will always be a role for colonoscopy
