Acanthosis nigricans: These could be a normal variant since there is a family history. It is most commonly seen overweight individuals and associated with diabetes and some other internal diseases.

Acanthosis: That sounds like acanthosis nigricans, which is a manifestation of Insulin resistance. I would see your doctor to verify the diagnosis, treatment would be with diabetes medications that increase Insulin sensitivity.
