Shingles: Varicella vaccine for chickenpox provides from 45-66% protection with 1 dose. After the second vaccine the benefits increase to 87%. The immune benefits will decrease with time without the booster dose. After contracting chickenpox there is a chance of having varicella zoster virus lie dormant in local nerve cells/ganglion. Under periods of stress or illness the virus can reappear as "shingles".

Nothing dramatic: Natural chickenpox provides lifelong immunity in those with a normal immune system. It can occur after the vaccine, since a percentage of the population will not develop protective antibodies to the weakened shot strain of this virus.Shingles is the re-emergence of this virus in a localized rash years/decades after chickenpox or the shot. Lifelong risk is about 30%.
