Base of the toe: pain near the metatarsal may be the joint capsule bothering you or possible nerve problem. See your podiatrist for treatment.

Varies: There are a number of possibilities, probably the three most common are a synovitis from the adjacent joint capsule, a Morton's neuroma, or a stress reaction/fracture. I would not hesitate to be seen if it is giving you a lot of trouble.
