Safety: It's quite simple, actually, SSRI/SNRI's have been shown to be quite effective and are much safer than the alternative options. Personally, and this is my own personal preference, I tend to start with either a treatment that targets multiple neurotransmitters (such as Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) or Cymbalta) or a pure SSRI (like Lexapro).
