Depends: Acute retroviral syndrome occurs usually 1-4 weeks from exposure, and can last a couple of weeks; this is highly nonspecific with just fevers, chills, and myalgias, and often confused with flu or other viral illness. Once that is gone, the next manifestation is usually several years down the road with an opportunistic infection.
