Glands: This type of tenderness suggests inflamed lymph glands or even inflammation of the thyroid. Also it could be due to irritation or inflammation of muscles or skin in the area. See your physician if symptoms worsen or persist or if redness or swelling develop.

Nodes/thyroid: Pain on the outside of you neck like that could be from enlarged lymph nodes or enlarged thyroid. Please see your doctor for an exam as soon as possible.
