Could be soft tissue: the knee pain with sudden onset can be little cartilage pieces that break loose.. however if the pain is outside the joint, tendon strain, knee cap subluxation can also cause sudden pain. Ice, nsaids such as motrin. With any persistent swelling, see MD for arthrocentesis and perhaps a cortisone shot
