Ankle swelling: Ice and elevate when at rest. Use an ankle brace when working out, and see a foot and ankle specialist if swelling or pain persists.

Take it slow: That's more than 6+ months since you've worked out and the key is to not immediately stress the ankle. Make sure that you condition yourself with stretching prior and start with low-impact. Rather than the traditional "jumping" jacks...consider a low-impact version of stepping out to the side. Again, I can't emphasize enough the importance of stretching - before AND after.
