Internal bleeding: A black bowel movement, particularly if it is soft and very foul-smelling, often is it indication of internal bleeding and is an emergency. If you are having a stool that fits that description, go to the emergency room or call 911 immediately. Having said that, certain medications, such as Pepto-Bismol, can make the stool dark also. Some foods can also make the stool darker. Good luck.
