Flashing lights like: a thunder bolt across the side of your vision is due to retinal stimulation or tugging. This is generally due to the vitreous gelly shifting around in the back of the eye and tugging on the retina. More common as you get older but can happen in younger adults that are very nearsighted. I am assuming you know it's not a retinal detachment because you had a dilated eye exam already. If not, get one.
