Highly variable: Hi. It's DKA (Diabetic KetoAcidosis), not DKE. How long it takes to go into DKA is highly variable and generally gets longer the older the person is at age of diagnosis. Most diabetics are diagnosed before onset of DKA these days simply because of seeing doctors and ease of lab testing. Once they've been type 1 for awhile and have little or no beta cell function remaining, it can happen faster.
