Probably for PCOS: Polycystic ovarian symdrome consisting of multiple ovarian cysts, that often lead or is associated with endocrine abnormalities, which may lead to obesity, increased blood sugar levels, facial hair because of increased testosterone-type hormones....If the doctor didn't state that you have diabetes, then the metformin is for the PCOS, which is not uncommon to use in this entity.

Yes, for pcos: Metformin is used for the treatment of PCOS. It decreases androgen and insulin level, and promote ovulation, all of which are common pathophysiologic changes in patient with PCOS.
