Impact of gum: The main thing that results from gum chewing is air swallowing which causes more burping and, possibly, the gurgling. There are some components in sugar-free gum such a maltitol, a sweetener, which has reported GI side effects such as gas and diarrhea. Some people have actually promoted gum chewing as a remedy for constipation and, of course, exercise should HELP consipation as well.
