Needs to be treated: You say the child is asymptomatic but if she isn't gaining weight then she is having problems. There are two types of treatments and she should probably have both (but your doctor would know). Metronidazole is safe and is the first treatment to get rid of any parasites inside of organs. Then she needs a second antibiotic like paromomycin that will stay in the intestine and kill parasites there.
