A member asked:

I need to confirm a years long active disseminated amebiasis infection of entamoeba histolytica that is currently being treated with metronidazole. will a pcr or antibody for entamoeba histolytica be the most conclusive?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

If one can't demonstrate the actual organisms then the antibody test is proof of an amebiasis history but I feel it's not conclusive of an active case. An infectious disease specialist is best to answer your question. I doubt there are many MDs on this panel that have treated such patients.
