Walker boot or cast : Yes. Or, you can have a short-leg (or below-the-knee) cast applied to your fractured lower extremity during your bone healing process.

If it is broken, yes: 4 weeks is still early to start motion in a broken ankle. If it is just a chip, then probably taking the boot off is okay, but no weight bearing.

YES, ALL THE TIME: Every doctor has a different opinion on this. I have always told my patients to sleep in the boot; treat it as a non-removable cast. It's best, though, to follow your attending physician's advice on this. I have no idea what kind of break it is. Regards, Dr. Latva

Absolutely: I typically tell fracture patients who are being treated with a boot to sleep in it... especially when getting up to go to the bathroom... you don't have to worry about putting it on. Just clean it up really well on the bottom when you are allowed to walk in it... or wrap in a plastic bag so your bed doesn't get dirty. Best wishes!

I suppose not..: If you are wearing a boot, the chances are that the fracture is not as severe as one that would have been casted. I would think that it would be safe to sleep without a boot. You could possibly reinforce the ankle with an ace type bandage, just for security. Remember to either use crutches when going to the bathroom or put your boot back on.
