Need core Temp: Core temperatures are always best for infants. When it comes to taking a temperature that is accurate in an infant, the only way to get a reliable reading is a rectal reading. Therefore, get a medium priced ($20) thermometer. Ear, temporal, arm pit or oral in a baby are just not accurate enough.

Confusing question: Yes there are thermometers that take a reading from the ear to give the kids temperature. If you have a specific question about these or the preferred process, please submit another question with a clear question.
