Shouldn't happen: With proper understanding and daily management periodontal disease and tooth decay can be stopped. By learning how to properly take care of your teeth daily, you can stop further occurrences. Ask your dentist and dental hygienist to take the time to teach you how you personally need to manage yourself day to day. That is the best solution.

Not often!: Perio abscesses are often hyper-responses to an irritant. When gum tissue is healthy (no bone loss) abscesses usually result from foods, like popcorn, whose thin hulls get pushed between gum and tooth. However, when gums are inflamed, "flabby", with deep pocketing, anything can "jam in" and mix with existing bacteria to create a super response that can rapidly destroy the tooth's socket.

Infrequently: Fortunately, not very often! a localized periodontal abscess is usually a result of a specific problem - it may be trauma, a cracked tooth, a lesion of some type, or a foreign body impaction. These are infrequent. If you have been diagnosed with chronic moderate or severe periodontitis and have significant generalized bone loss, you will likely experience more frequent abscesses.
