A 52-year-old female asked:

which is the safest osteoporosis treatment that builds bone and prevents fractures, without causing problems to the kidneys?

Only forteo builds: Forteo is the only drug that induces bone formation. The others prevent bone loss, although that allows the bones to become stronger over time, too. None of the meds damage the kidneys, but the bisphosphonates (like fosamax) can't be used in someone who has kidney dysfunction.

Healthy lifestyle: Take calcium and vitamin d supplementation as advised by a doctor who knows your condition. Exercise is all important and use of one of those small round in-the-home floor trampolines can be useful if gently and regularly undertaken. We have strong bones to hold up our body tower within the gravitational field. If you magnify the field, your bones will accommodate.

Depends: Most ankle twists (sprains) do not involve a fracture but occasionally a more severe twist will cause something called an avulsion fracture where the twisted ligament pulls a small piece of bone away and this is called an avulsion fracture.

Too many causes: Honestly there are far too many possible causes to list. Thats what a doctor does when they ask you all the questions so they can figure out the cause. See your doctor to get at the cause. Some causes are simple and some more difficult to figure out. The internet can help with information but not with diagnosis. Good luck.

How long is the healing process for a fractured arm bone?

Dr. Ronald Galyon

Varies: It varies with age, health, surrounding, and other factors. Very young children may heal a fracture in this little and 3- 4 weeks, while adults, average six weeks, with geriatrics eight weeks and longer.Healing is quicker with proper alignment and immobilization. Surrounding soft tissue damage and preexisting health issues often retard the healing process.
