Several things: Warm salt water gargles will offer temporary relif. You doctor could try xylocaine (lidocaine) viscous which will numb the tonsilar area. Someimes pain medication in liquid form may be necessary.

Suggestions: I usually recommend narcotic/tylenol (acetaminophen) combination supplemented with Ibuprofen in adults sometimes adding viscous xylocaine. In children tylenol (acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen are a good combination. I avoid narcotics in kids because of the risk of life-threatening respiratory depression.
