Measurement error: Dating a pregnancy by ultrasound relies on measuring the length of specific structures. There is some variability in the normal range of size of these structures and some variability in the ability of the ultrasound to identify and measure this correctly. Thus there will be error in the "guess" of the age of the pregnancy. In the 2nd trimester, that error is about +/- 2 weeks.
