Some basics: To have normal growth in the womb the fetus needs several things. It needs proper genes/chromosomes=abnormalities can lead to undergrowth. It needs proper nourishment= poor maternal diet/health/defective placenta/knot in umbilical cord can starve baby. It needs to be free of infection= bacteria or viruses that enter from the blood can cause it. Many of these conditions are sorted out after birth.
