Depends: The risk of melanoma leading to death is related to the thickness of the melanoma. The thicker the melanoma, the greater the risk of it spreading. It is the spreading of the melanoma to another part of your body that leads to bad outcomes.

Melanoma: Can spread. The chance of it spreading to other organs is greater the deeper the melanoma grows. That is why catching it early is important. Once it spreads, it can be deadly.

Unforntunately: Unfortunately melanoma is very dangerous disease. If caught early melanoma is highly treatable and curable. However once melanoma has traveled to distant sights in the body the 5 year survival is around 10 to 15%.
