Normal: The tongue has several bumps on its surface. There are many papillae located on the tongue some very large in a v pattern on the rear area. You can have smaller taste buds pop up a become red when irritated, or patterns of these taste buds that look like land shapes(geographic), or even large cracks(fissured). You dentist can tell what is normal.

Probably normal: Your tongue is covered by many taste buds or papillae that are part of the normal anatomy of the tongue. However, not only should you have this checked by a dentist to be sure, but everyone should have a complete head and neck screening for cancer at every dental checkup. It's important to not only check the gums and teeth, but the tongue, cheeks, lips, palate and floor of the mouth.
