Depends on your gums: Depending on your periodontal health and the quality of your home care, recommended cleaning intervals can vary widely. Ask your dentist what their opinion is based on their knowledge of your particular needs. The internet is sometimes misleading in that many health recommendations are very patient-specific and only your doctor really knows what is appropriate for you.

Everyone is unique: Six months is a general rule of thumb, and not an absolute standard. Each mouth is different, so you need to discuss your professional oral hygiene needs with your dentist. Think of it this way: it is less expensive and painful to have your teeth cleaned more often than it is to develop periodontal disease and have it treated with surgery. Prevention is key.

Periodontal Disease: If scaling and root planing is done, the more you have to see your dentist every 3 mos.

Depends: Even though 6-9 months is usually recommended, I have patients that require a cleaning interval anywhere from 2 - 24 months. It really depends on the patient. Your dentist can give you a more appropriate interval based on the amount of tartar that you build up over a monitored period of time.
