A member asked:

I've read stories on the internet of people dying of wisdom tooth removal, is it that common to die from such a simple procedure?

No: It's very rare, but it is possible if you have extenuating health problems. A good consent form will advise you of this, and you should ask your oral surgeon this very question. Also - some wisdom teeth removals are complicated, but some are very easy. It may all depend on your particular anatomy.

Not common: The procedure is not always simple.. It could be quite complex. People rarely die from the extraction(s), but rather have complications from the anesthesia or from an unforseen infection. These complications can arise from any surgery. Speak to your oral surgeon and have all your questions answered to put your mind at ease.

NO, very uncommon: The problem is not the removal of the wisdom teeth themselves, but rather complications from the anesthesia. Any time someone is placed under deep or general anesthesia there is a risk. This risk can be minimized by making sure the oral surgeon and their staff are properly trained and certified for the level of anesthesia being given.

Internet search: The incidence of mortality associated with wisdom tooth extraction is so rare that it draws a following of 'sensationalists" on the internet. Problem is not the surgery itself, but untoward anesthetic reaction or infection, both of which are extremely rare. Discuss your concerns with a specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to gain a full picture.
