You need a retainer: After a twin block has repositioned your jaw, muscle fibers that have not yet re-aligned will put a relapsing force on your jaws until normal cell turnover re-aligns them to conform to the new position. If the twin block is removed before the condyle and upper part of the jaw joint have completely remodeled, you will have a dual bite; only one where your teeth line up well. That's not stable.
