Should not move: I am a pediatric dentist. Palatal expanders are contra-indicated for a 33year old patient. Palantine sutures are calcified in adults.

Who is it for: Is this for you or one of your children? The purpose of expansion is to normalize the width of the upper jaw. Is has nothing to do with teeth. For kids this happens very easily as the jaw is still forming. However, for adults to truly expand the palate surgery to reseparate the bones is usually required.

Age and occlusion: Depending on your age wearing the expander, the duration of wearing the expander, and the final occlusion upon removing the expander. The younger when you wear your expander, the less relapse you may experience. The longer you wear the expander (up to 9 months or more), the less relapse you may experience. The optimal occlusion at the time the expander remove also minimized the relapse.

Different: Palate expander is for correction of skeletal width. There will be some dental changes as well, but that's not the prime use of an expander. To move teeth you need braces. Ask your qualified orthodontic specialist to show you what will be changing and why.
